Brief Biographical Information

Hayward Corley

Mr. Corley ran track and played football at Howard. As a member of the 1975 4 X 400 relay team, Mr. Corley achieved All-American status at NCAA Nationals as the group finished 5^th in the finals. He was the 1974 400 meter MEAC Champion. In football, Mr. Corley achieved All-MEAC status twice. He played with a defensive backfield ranked "first in the nation" among small colleges. His teammates selected him unanimously as captain his senior year and Coach Doug Porter called him "the pivotal person on the team." He graduated in 1975 and signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs. Since 1979, he has worked for the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Resources.

Vannessa Graham-Jenkins

Ms. Graham-Jenkins played basketball at Howard University. Her career-points total of 1,577 places her in the University's number two position. She holds records for the most field goals attempted in a season with 597 in 1987-88 and the most steals (8) in a game in a 1986 contest against the University of Maryland. She was selected as MEAC MVP in 1985 and 1988. She was named to the MEAC Tournament First Team in 1985 and 1988. She was a starting guard on two MEAC Championship teams. Her numbers are impressive, but could have been even more so had she not received severe back and knee injuries in an automobile accident after her freshman year. She graduated in 1988.

Emmett Grier

Mr. Grier served as the captain of the swimming team for two years. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Year in 1963. He set eight conference records, was the University's statistical leader for two years and CIAA Player of the Week 14 times. His teams won the CIAA Conference Championship four times. He graduated in 1966.

Gary "Flea" Harrell

Mr. Harrell was a wide receiver who holds the records for most career receptions with 184, most punt return yardage with 417 yards and the most punt returns with 29. He also holds the record for the most receptions in a single game with 13 and the most receiving touchdowns in a game with 4. He was named to the MEAC first team in 1993. He signed as a free agent with the New York Giants and graduated in 1996. He is currently an assistant football coach at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX.

Shaka Hislop

Mr. Hislop was named an All-American in 1988 by the Soccer Coaches Association, a year when the HU team played in NCAA Championship Game. He was team captain that year and considered one of "the most feared" goalies in the nation. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Since then, he has played professionally for various teams in England. Currently, he is competing as a member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in the World Cup Competition.

Stephanie Johnson

Ms. Johnson was the MEAC Singles Champion in Tennis in 1990, 1991 and 1992. She was Conference Doubles Champion in 1991, 1992 and 1993. She the University's Most Valuable Player from 1990 through 1993. She served as co-captain in the 1991-92 season and as captain in the 1992-93 season. She achieved national ranking as an amateur and as a professional. She received her undergraduate degree in 1993 and earned a master's in 2004.

Annette Lee

While playing basketball at Howard University, Ms. Lee was named to the MEAC Rookie First Team her freshman year, the MEAC All-Conference Team the next year and in her third year to the MEAC First Team and was also selected as an All-American by the Black College Sports Information Directors. In her last year of collegiate play, she was again named to the MEAC First Team as well as to the MEAC Tournament Team. She is the third all-time leading scorer, ranks second in rebounds and is the leader in most free throws made. She graduated in 1994.

Richard McGhee

Mr. McGhee served as an offensive tackle and guard on the Howard University football team from 1970 - 1973. He was named to the All - MEAC First Team for 1972 and 1973. Although there are no statistics for offensive linemen, McGhee was selected as Offensive Lineman of the Week numerous times by MEAC Sports Information Directors. He played on the first Bison team to qualify for the Conference Championship Game. He signed as a free agent with the Houston Oilers and later signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He graduated in 1980 and is an Emmy-winning general manager for DC 28, the television for the District of Columbia Public Schools.

Jay "Sky" Walker

Mr. Walker transferred from Long Beach State University after football was dropped from its schedule. He is the single-season leader in pass completions with 223 and in passing yardage with 3,508. He also holds the single-game record for pass completions with 38. He was selected to the All-MEAC teams of 1992 and 1993 and was voted Offensive Player of the Year in 1993. He was voted All-American by the Sheridan Broadcasting Network. As quarterback, he led the Bison to an undefeated regular season in1993 and a national I-AA ranking of 8. He was drafted into the NFL by the New England Patriots. He graduated in 1998. Currently, he is CEO and President of Walker Financial Services and broadcasts football games on the MBC Network.

James "Tim" Watson

Mr. Watson was an integral member of the 1989 defense that finished the season ranked number one in I-AA football. He holds the Howard record for career blocked kicks with 7. He was named to the All-MEAC team in 1991 and 1992. He was defensive captain from 1990 through 1992. He was first Howard University player to be named a GTE Academic All-American. He graduated cum laude in 1992 and was drafted by the Green Packers in the 6^th round. He retired from professional football in 1999 with a neck injury.
