Howard University Mission Statement

The Mission Statement of Howard University, quoted below, describes the institution’s central aim and purposes:

Howard University is a comprehensive, research intensive, and historically Black private university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon education opportunities for Black students.  Moreover, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching, research and service, committed to the development of distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates and to the discovery of solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world.  With an abiding interest in both domestic and international affairs, the University is committed to continuing to produce leaders for America and the global community.

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (or Athletics Department) is promulgated in order to complement and provide comprehensive and integral support to others activities and the mission of the University. This mission is articulated in the following Mission Statement:

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is an integral part of the University and is broad in scope and diversity. It endeavors to offer a variety of opportunities for qualified students in athletic competition, training and support activities. The department is obliged to attract dedicated administrators, coaches and staff committed to recruiting promising student-athletes and developing disciplined and inspired graduates who will provide leadership in solving human and social problems in the nation and the global community.
