Tonja Braxton is in her sixth season as the head women's softball coach.  She also serves as the Associate Director of Athletics for Academics.

The Howard softball team has improved each season under the direction of Braxton.  Last season, Howard won the MEAC Tournament title for the first time in history while also posting a school-best 35-21 mark. The Lady Bison received its first ever automatic bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament in 2007 and faced off with powerhouses Arizona and The Pacific in the Tuscon Regional. In 2006, the team had another impressive season after win more regular season and MEAC tournament games than the previous three seasons combined.

Prior to coming to Howard, Braxton served as head softball coach at Bowie State for seven seasons and compiled an impressive 126-82 won-loss record while being selected coach of the year three times. In 2000, her team was crowned the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) Eastern Division Champions and was the CIAA Tournament Run­ner-Ups. Before being named head coach, Braxton served two seasons (1993-95) as the assistant coach at Bowie State.

Braxton was a four-year starter on the Bulldogs' softball team playing pitcher, left field and third base and in 1993 she was named the Bowie State Coca-Cola Female Athlete of the Year.

Always a strong proponent of academics, Braxton earned her Bachelor's degree in political science from Bowie State in 1993, then went on to earn her Master's degree in administrative management in 1995.
