Matt Salerno is entering his fourth season as the Howard Bison head coach for swimming program.  Salerno has helped guide the Bison Men's and Women's programs to 10 individual school records and three relay records.  The Bison swimmers have also made 83 additions to the Howard All-Time Top 10 list for individual events as well as 19 new marks to the All-Time Top 5 for relay events.

Salerno came to HU after serving as the Assistant Swimming coach at Davidson College under the guidance of John Young in 2008-2009.  While at Davidson, Salerno helped guide the Wildcats to a pair of second place finishes in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships (CCSA) as well as helped Davidson swimmers achieve 29 new college records.  Before his collegiate coaching experience, Salerno was the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia from 2004-2008.  He led the women's team to the 2008 Virginia High School AAA Championship, the first in the school's history in any sport.  The women's program won the Northern Virginia Region Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008.  He was named Fairfax High School Coach of the Year twice during his tutelage as well as the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in swimming in 2008.

Salerno also served as coach with the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club (Mecklenburg County, NC,) Mason Makos Swim Club (Fairfax, VA) and the Villa Aquatic Club (Fairfax, VA.)

Salerno received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from the College of William and Mary in 2003.  He was co-captain of the Tribe Swimming and Diving team his senior year, which culminated his four years on the team.  He earned his Master's Degree in School Administration at the University of Virginia in 2010 and is currently the assistant principal at William Halley Elementary School in Fairfax Station, Virginia.  He and his wife, Patty, reside in Virginia.
