James Wilhelmi enters his third season as an assistant coach on the men's basketball staff. Wilhelmi, who played an integral role in Howard's successful recruiting season, has paid his dues and brings a wealth of experience to the staff. He came to Howard after serving as an assistant coach at Salisbury University.

Prior to Salisbury, Wilhelmi served as the head boys' basketball coach at Sussex Central High School in Georgetown, DE from 2003 to 2004. He also served as an assistant at University of Evansville from 2002-2003; at Texas Southern University from 2001 to 2002; at University of Maryland Eastern Shore from 2000 to 2001; at Hampton University from 1998 to 2000; at Northeastern Illinois from 1997 to 1998; and at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for two years. His duties include assisting with game preparation, administrative responsibilities and recruiting. 

Wilhelmi received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1995) and a Master of Science degree in human development and community resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1997).

As an athlete, Wilhelmi played prep basketball at La Follette High School in Madison, WI and went on to letter in football at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for three years.
