Howard Hosts Cheyney in Non-Conference Matchup this weekend

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Saturday's game will feature a match-up between the Wolves of Cheyney University and the Bison of Howard University.  Cheyney (1-4), from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), is coming off 30-19 win over Lock Haven at home this past Saturday for their first win of the season.  The Bison (1-3) defeated Winston-Salem State, 24-21 in overtime this past Saturday for their first win of the season.

THE COACHES: Cheyney University is coached by Tim Newsom (West Virginia, ‘92), who is in his third season and has a 4-23 career record to date there.  Howard University is coached by Carey Bailey, who is in his first season after serving as defensive line coach at the University of Minnesota.  Bailey has paid his dues after stints at Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Middle Tennessee State, Louisiana Lafayette and VMI as an assistant coach.  Newsom and Bailey served as graduate assistants at West Virginia.

THE SERIES: The Bison last played Cheyney in 1992 and prevailed 75-6 to hold a commanding 10-1 advantage in the series which dates back to 1935.

KEY PLAYERS

Cheyney

Offensively, the Wolves are led by senior QB DERRICK MURRY (56 of 91, 878 yards, 7TDs, 6 interceptions), junior RB CHINOSO OKORO (44 carries, 127 yards, 1 TD),  senior RB BILLY MITCHELL (45 carries, 145 yards; 9 receptions, 100 yards, 1 TD), junior WR DOMONIQUE CURRY (22 receptions, 410 yards, 3 TDs), senior WR CHARLES JOHNSON (17 receptions, 261 yards, 1 TD) and sophomore WR ERIK FRAZIER (15 receptions, 168 yards, 3 TDs).

Defensively, Cheyney is led by senior LB  BRANDON HAWKINS (24 solos, 27 assists, 3 tackles for losses), senior DE BRANDON TYMOUS (12 solos, 9 assists, 4 tackles for losses, 2 sacks), senior DB TYREE COOPER (16 solos, 11 assists, 2 interceptions), senior SS JOE OKAFOR (19 solos, 15 assists, 2.5 tackles for losses, a sack and a fumble recovery), junior LB KELVEN QUICK (16 solos, 3 assists, 2.5 tackles for losses, 2 sacks) and senior LB JUSTIN ALLEN (25 solos, 24 assists, 3.0 tackles for losses, 1.5 sack).

WOLVES DEN: Cheyney is averaging 228 yard per game passing but only 37 yards on the ground...after scoring only 59 points in their first four games, the Wolves erupted for 30 points in their win over Lock Haven...Cheyney is a minus 9 on turnover ratio, having turned the ball over 19 times...the Wolves are being out-scored 63-30 in the second half this season...Murry is averaging almost 300 yards per game passing...Murry (Riverdale Baptist/Bowie, MD) is among 8 players from the local area who will be returning home.

Howard

Offensively, Howard is led by senior QB BRIAN JOHNSON (73 of 120, 788 yards, 9 TDs, 2 interceptions; 55 carries, 253 yards), junior TBs TERRY PERRY (32 carries, 130 yards) and KARLOS WHITTAKER (35 carries, 117 yards, 1 TD), senior WRs JARAHN WILLIAMS (23 receptions, 234 yards, 6 TDs) and LARRY DUNCAN (12 receptions, 110 yards) and junior WR ARLANDUS HOOD (13 receptions, 123 yards, 1 TD).

Defensively, the Bison are led by senior All-American DE RUDY HARDIE (11 solos, 9 assists, 8.0 tackles for losses, 2.5 sacks), senior S RANDELL MEANS (13 solos, 22 assists, 2.5 tackles for losses), red-shirt sophomore LB ROBERT PARKER (8 solos, 12 assists, a sack), senior LB ROBERT DOWDY (12 solos, 23 assists, 4.5 tackles for losses), junior LB ENDOR COOPER (18 solos, 18 assists, 4 tackles for losses), junior CB RICKEY JACKSON (9 solos, 14 assists, an interception), senior DE JARRETT BURGESS (3 solos, 14 assists, 1.5 tackles for losses) and junior DT JAMES ROBINSON (5 solos, 12 assists).

BISON HOOVES:  The Bison have been outscored, 33-10 in the second quarter this season...Leonard Moore is averaging almost 25 yards per kick return to rank third in the MEAC...Dennis Wiehberg has been named the MEAC special teams player of the week for his efforts in the win over WSSU...Johnson ranks high in several statistical categories: he is second in total offense and in passing and third in passing efficiency...Williams leads the conference in receptions per game...the Bison lead the MEAC in third down conversions (43 percent) and are second in time of possession (33:23)...after failing to get a sack or interception in the first three games, Howard recorded seven sacks and two interceptions against WSSU.
