HAMPTON, VA. - Hampton University erupted for 23 second quarter points and went on to cruise to an easy 37-0 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Armstrong Stadium.  The win extended the Pirates streak to 13 straight against the Bison and it snapped Howard's two-game win streak.

Neither team was able to generate much offense early until Hampton (3-2, 2-1 in the MEAC) put together an 11-play, 76 yard drive that was culminated on a Herbert Bynes 25-yard strike to Loren Patterson on fourth down.  That score came just before the end of the first quarter and set the tone for what was to come.

The Pirates used that as momentum to break the game open, taking advantage of Howard miscues and scoring the 23 points in a dizzying six-minute span.

The first came on a Lamarcus Coker 4-yard run that was set up on a 66-yard pass play from Bynes to Damon McDaniel.

The Bison aided the Hampton cause when they fumbled on their next possession. But the defense held and forced a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Stovall that extended the lead to 16-0 at the 9:00 mark

Hampton was at it again less than a minute later when Howard fumbled and gave the Pirates a short field.  It took Hampton just one play, a 22-yard connection from Bynes to Reginald Hicks to make it 23-0.

Hampton closed out the half on Bynes' third TD pass of the game, this time to Isaiah Thomas from 50 yards.

Howard (2-3 overall, 0-2 in the MEAC) was able to put together its best drive of the game late in the third quarter but it was aborted when a Floyd Haigler pass was picked off in the end zone to stop the drive.

The game was marred by some ugly play from the Pirates who committed a whopping 23 penalties for 170 yards.

Coker finished with a game-high 125 yards on 21 carries and two TDs while Bynes completed 8 of 16 for 204 yards and three TDs.

The Bison got a fine performance on offense from freshman running back Andra Williams, who rushed for a career-best 71 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, Jermell Ellis (13 tackles), Ian Simon (9 tackles) and Will Croner (6 tackles, a forced fumble, 3 QB hurries) all played well in a losing effort.

NEXT UP: Howard does not get a break as it has a short week to prepare for Morgan State on Thursday in Baltimore, MD at 7:30 pm in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.  The Pirates travel to Norfolk, VA to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State on Saturday in the Battle of the Bay Classic at 1 pm.
