Iona Uses Second Half Run To Get by Howard

Ames, IA—Nov. 23--Steve Burtt scored a game-high 25 points and Kiril Wachsmann added 24 and 13 rebounds to help Iona College get by Howard, 80-68 in the opening round of the Cyclone Classic.

Despite the efforts of Burtt, who tallied 17 in the first half, the Gaels found themselves trailing the Bison by 12 at one point and by 40-38 at intermission.

The Bison (0-1), under first year head coach Gil Jackson, used a combination of pressure defense that forced 12 turnovers, and the hot outside shooting of junior guards Darek “Skip” Mitchell and Will Gant, who combined for 18 points to lead by as much as 12 before taking a 40-38 advantage to the lockerroom.

The second half featured runs by both teams until the Gaels (1-0) used a 42-14 run midway through the second half to all but put the game away.  Much of the damage was done by Wachsmann, who connected on 11 of 17 shots, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked four shots.  Iona shot a sizzling 68 percent in the second half and held a 40-23 advantage on the boards.

Howard, which has now lost 18 straight games dating back to last season, got an outstanding all-around effort from 5-6 senior point guard Louis Ford, who finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals and only one turnover in 33 minutes of play.  Gant finished with 13, Mitchell with 12 and senior forward Bilal Russell had 10 as four Bison scored in double figures.

The Bison will take on host Iowa State on Friday at 8 p.m.
