Myatt, Hudson Lead Howard To Win Over Morgan State
Washington, DC—February 28—Eugene Myatt scored a team-high 19 points and Darryl Hudson added 16 to lead Howard University to a 72-59 win over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at Burr Gymnasium. The win was the third straight for the Bison (5-20 overall, 4-12 in the MEAC).
Hudson, a 6-4 junior forward, tallied 12 of his points in the first 20 minutes as Howard led, 37-22 at intermission. The Bison shot 57 percent (13 of 23), marking the third straight game that they have shot over 55 percent.
Myatt, a 6-4 freshman forward, picked up the slack in the second half by scoring 10 of his points to keep the Bears (4-23 overall, 4-12 in the MEAC) at bay. Myatt, who was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, hit on 5 of 9 shots, made all 7 of his free throws and added 7 rebounds.
“The coaches have been pushing me all season,” said Myatt. “When I first got here, all I wanted to do was score. But they have worked with me on other facets of my game. The difference now is confidence.” Myatt has scored 53 points in the last three games.
Unlike the previous two victories where the Bison relied heavily upon some torrid outside shooting, they made an important adjustment for this game. After averaging over 17 three-point attempts in those contests, Howard attempted only seven. The Bison went to the basket with great success, resulting in 29 free throw attempts.
“Morgan State made some changes in their strategy,” said Howard first year coach Gil Jackson. “We were able to make some adjustments. We are just playing better.” Howard shot a season-best 97 percent (28 of 29) from the charity stripe, with Hudson and Myatt combining for a perfect 19 for 19.
Howard senior point guard Louis Ford, who was playing his last home game, contributed 11 points 4 assists and 4 steals and sophomore Jeron Smith added 11 off the bench.
The Bears got a game-high 22 points from Joseph McLean and 13 from Clinton Cunningham off the bench in a losing cause.
GAME NOTES: The Bison recorded 10 assists on 21 baskets and added 11 steals for good measure…this is the first time that the Bison have won three straight since 2003.
