Baltimore, MD—January 28---Darryl Proctor scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help Coppin State University get by Howard University, 70-61 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at the Coppin Center.

            In what is becoming an all-too-familiar story, the Bison (2-15 overall, 1-7 in the MEAC) fell behind early in the game only to rally and lead at halftime.  The Bison shot 54 percent (14 of 26) and were in a good position to snap the streak when they took a 44-39 lead at the 18:20 mark of the second half.

            But the Bison suddenly went cold and Coppin State took advantage with a 11-2 run to take a 50-46 lead.

            Howard re-grouped and used a comedy of errors by both teams during a long stretch midway through the second half to stay close.  Then Proctor, a 6-4, 230-pound sophomore from District Heights, MD and last year’s MEAC Rookie of the Year, took over and made all the important points during a 9-4 run down the stretch that sealed the win for the Eagles (6-13 overall, 6-2 in the MEAC).

            Howard came into the game as one of the top three-point shooting teams in the conference, but failed to find the range, connecting on only 2 of 15 for the night.  The Bison added to their woes by missing nine free throws, many coming when the game was still within reach.  Howard, which leads the MEAC in free throw shooting (76 percent), shot a season low 59 percent.

            Junior forward Darryl Hudson again came off the bench to lead the Bison with 14 points.  No other Howard player reached double figures.

            The Eagles got 15 points from Tywain McKee and 10 from Robert Pressey.

NEXT UP:  Howard will attempt to snap the nine-game losing streak when it travels back to Baltimore to take on winless Morgan State on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Hill Fieldhouse…the Bears have lost 18 in a row…Coppin State will host Maryland Eastern Shore at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Coppin Center.
