Howard Put Up Strong Effort But Fall Short in Loss to Georgia

Athens, GA—January 2—Howard University displayed hustle and heart throughout but came up short, falling to the University of Georgia by six, 72-78, to closeout its non-conference season.

It was all Georgia (10-3) throughout the first half as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game and went up by as many as 12 late in the first half.  The Bulldogs kept the pressure on and enjoyed an 11 point lead going into the locker-room at the half.

The Bison would not hang their heads, as they came out in the second half on fire.  Howard began the second half with a15-4 run to tie the game at 46 with a little less than 14 minutes remaining.  The Bulldogs appeared to have gained back the momentum, as they held the Bison scoreless for two minutes going on an 8-0 run of their own.  The Bison fought hard to keep the game within arms reach but appeared to have run out of gas late in the second half as the Bulldogs went up once again by 11 with a little under two minutes left in the ball game.

The Bison was energized once again when Will Gant hit a big three-pointer after a made free-throw by Darryl Hudson, to pull the Bison within six.  Darek “Skip” Mitchell was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer and made all three foul-shots to pull the Bison to within 4 with 17 seconds left in the game.  The Bison would eventually falling by six.

Howard finished the game with three players in double-figures led by Gant with 13.  Louis Ford and Eugene Myatt each scored 12 points as the Bison fell to 2-8 on the season.  Mitchell and Hudson each pulled in six rebounds to lead the Bison.

The Bulldogs was led in scoring by Randallstown, MD native Levi Stukes, who scored a game high 22 points.

GAME NOTES:  Jason Trotter who scored in double-figures in the last two games for the Bison fouled out the game with five points.

UP NEXT: Howard will host the Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Thursday at 8 p.m.  The Bison will then go on a two game road trip to the Tidewater area to face Norfolk State on Saturday and Hampton next Monday…The Hampton game will be televised live on ESPNU at 7 p.m.
