Bison Lose Despite Career High By McHenry

Boxscore

LOGAN, UTAH - Chris McHenry came off the bench to pour in a career-high 29 points and Eugene Myatt added 20 but it was not enough as Howard University fell, 84-75 to Wyoming in the second round of the Duel in the Desert men's basketball tournament at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

A 5-11, 170-pound freshman guard from Milwaukee, WI, McHenry hit on 8 of 16 shots from the field and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.  He added 6 rebounds, also a career best, two assists and two steals in the best performance of his young career.

Wyoming (11-2) jumped out to an early lead only to have the Bison tie the game at 13-all.  The Cowboys threatened to put the game away following a 35-20 run to end the half.  They were able to build their lead by shooting 62 percent (16 of 26) from the field.  Their senior guard combo of Brandon Ewing (16) and Sean Ogiri (13) accounted for 29 of the points on 8 of 15 shooting from the field.

In the second half, Wyoming became sloppy with the ball and were called for three technical fouls.  That enabled Howard (1-9) to cut the deficit to 50-45 at the 14:03 mark.  Myatt, McHenry and sophomore center Paul Kirkpatrick were instrumental in the run.

But the Cowboys responded as Ewing took over and began to score from long range and the free throw line.  Wyoming built a 16-point lead at 82-66 with a little under two minutes left.  Howard gave it one more try but Ewing, who finished with a game-high 34 points, knocked down some free throws in the waning moments to secure the victory.

The Bison played much better following its opening 85-45 beatdown to Utah State.  They shot a season-best 17 for 17 from the charity stripe.  Myatt, who scored only seven points in the loss to Utah State, finished with 20 while Kirkpatrick, who failed to score in the previous game, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and helped establish a post presence.

Adam Walker, a sophomore forward, provided some defense with eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

In addition to Ewing's offense, the Cowboys got 15 from Ogirri and eight points and 10 rebounds from Tyson Johnson.

GAME NOTES: Howard continues to struggle from the three-point line...for the game, the Bison missed 17 of 19 taken...Randy Hampton re-injured his foot in the Utah State game and did not play...his status is questionable...Myatt now needs 70 points to reach the 1,000-point mark in his career.

NEXT UP: Howard will play Houston Baptist on Wednesday at 5:30 pm while Wyoming will take on Utah State at 8 pm.
