Bison Use Balanced Attack in Win Over Winston-Salem State
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
C.J. Prince came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points to
lead five players in double figures as Howard University pulled
away to a 75-63 win over Winston-Salem State University in a
non-conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium. The win snapped
a 14-game losing streak for the Bison.
The first half featured lead changes with neither team leading by
more than seven. Howard was able to take a 37-34 lead to the
locker room on the play of Kyle Riley, who tallied 11 of his 14 in
the first stanza.
The Bison took control in the second half. It pivoted on an
18-9 run=2 0that opened a 55-43 lead at the 11:53 mark. The
Rams (4-10) were able to get within eight at the 11-minute mark but
from there, Prince had the answer each time WSSU threatened.
"He makes shots and he can make them in traffic or from the wing,"
said Howard Coach Gil Jackson. "He has a really complete game
and he has brought a lot to this team."
A 6-3, 200-pound junior transfer from Maryland Eastern Shore,
Prince connected on 5 of 8 from beyond the arc while hitting all
six of his free throws for a career-high.
Howard also got significant contributions from senior forward/guard
Randy Hampton, senior guard Eugene Myatt and junior center Paul
Kirkpatrick, who combined for 21 of their team's 38 second half
points.
Hampton, who is helping with ball-handling chores in the absence of
freshman point guard Chris McHenry and Calvin Thompson, who are
currently academically ineligible, added 14 points and seven
rebounds, but more importantly, he proved to be a calming
factor.
"He's a very versatile player and we need that," said Coach
Jackson. "It is a big loss for us when he's not on the
floor. We have to keep him healthy."
Myatt, who reached the 1,000-point plateau on his first basket,
contributed 10 as did Kirkpatrick.
The Rams were paced by Brian Fisher and Paul Davis, who each scored
15 and Diontae, who added 11.
GAME NOTES: This was the third game that the
Bison played without the services of freshman starting point guard
Calvin Thompson, starting power forward Adam Walker and reserve
freshman guard Chris McHenry...all three have academic issues that
are being addressed...Myatt became the 18th player in school
history to reach the 1,000 point mark...this was just the third
game for Prince, but he has already scored 11 three pointers in
three games...after averaging 24 turnovers in the previous two
games, Howard had 14...despite having only nine players in uniform,
the Bison bench outscored the Rams, 26-8.
NEXT UP: Howard hosts South Carolina State on
Monday in a nationally televised game on ESPNU...tipoff is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
