Turnovers Doom Howard In Loss To Norfolk State
NORFOLK, VA. -
Michael DeLoach poured in a game-high 25 points and Corey Lyons
added 23 to lead, 14 coming in the second half, to lead Norfolk
State to an 85-71 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference men's game at Echols Hall.
With DeLoach tallying 14 points of his points, Norfolk State bolted
out to a 41-30 halftime lead. Sophomore guard Kyle Riley led
the Bison with 10 points, but team-leading scorer Eugene Myatt was
held to only three free throws.
Norfolk State (10-17 overall, 8-7 in the MEAC) maintained a
10-point lead through most of the second half as Lyons and Aleek
took turns keeping the Bison at bay. Howard (8-21 overall,
6-9 in the MEAC) aided and abetted the Spartans' cause with
turnovers that Norfolk converted into easy transition baskets.
The Bison refused to quit despite the turnovers and rallied to get
to within, 58-55 at the 9:43 mark. But Norfollk State
responded with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to
reestablish control at 70-57.
The Bison rally was spearheaded by the scoring of Myatt, who scored
17 of his team-high 20 after intermission and Randy Hampton
and Riley who combined for 15 second half points.
Howard lost despite shooting 50 percent (25 of 50) from the field
and 84 percent from the free throw line. But the 24 turnovers
that=2 0resulted into 35 Norfolk State points proved to be too much
to overcome.
In addition to DeLoach and Lyons' points, the Spartans got 14 from
Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys and 12 from Pauline.
Riley finished with 19, Hampton with 15 off the bench and Paul
Kirkpatrick with 10.
