Haley Leads UMES to Win Over Howard

Boxscore

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - Hillary Haley scored 20 of his career-high 33 points in the second half to help the University of Maryland Eastern Shore hold off Howard University, 67-66 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at the W.P. Hytche Center.

Haley started his assault on the Bison near the end of the first half when his three-point basket helped extend the Hawks' lead to 42-34 at intermission.

He then picked up where he left off, scoring 16 of his team's first 19 points in the second half including three consecutive three pointers.  The 6-6 sophomore guard from Oxon Hill, MD connected on 11 of 17 from the field, including a sizzling 7 of 10 from beyond the stripe.

Howard (6-16 overall, 5-3 in the MEAC) hurt itself with turnovers that allowed UMES to open a 13-point lead.

But the Bison refused to wilt under the torrid shooting of Haley and they rallied on the scoring of senior guard Curtis White, who tallied 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half.  White scored 13 points in the last three minutes as Howard staged a furious comeback that got them close but in the end, Haley knocked down two free throws to seal the win.

Howard aided the Hawks' cause with poor free throw shooting (6 of 15) and turnovers (22 points scored off 17 miscues)

Freshman Dadrian Collins chipped in with 14 points and Adam Walker came off the bench to contribute 9 points and 9 rebounds for Howard, which played without its leading scorer, Calvin Thompson, who was held out due to a coach's decision.

The Hawks (6-14 overall, 4-3 in the MEAC) got scoring from Tim Burns, who tallied all 14 of his points in the first half.
