Loyola’s Bench the Difference in Win Over Howard

Boxscore

BALTIMORE, MD. - Jamal Barney poured in a game-high 28 points off the bench and Tony Lewis added 14 as a reserve to help Loyola University defeat Howard, 85-51 in a non-conference men's basketball game at Reitz Arena.

Barney connected on 11 of 14 from the floor and Lewis was 6-of-7 as the Greyhounds' bench outscored the Bison, 61-9.

Howard (1-9) started the game slowly and trailed by as many as 17 before rallying to cut the deficit to 32-23 at the half.  Paul Kirkpatrick and Mike Phillips fueled the rally by combining for 10 of their team's last 12 points.

The Bison came out of the locker room with momentum and with Phillips continuing his strong play, reduced the deficit to 32-29 at the 18:11 mark of the second half.

Then Barney and Lewis took over and Howard had no answer.  Loyola (5-5) went on a 23-5 run over a seven-minute span to seal the deal and put the game out of reach.

The Bison were led by Phillips, who scored a career-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds.  Kirkpatrick just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds as no other Bison reached double figures.

Howard did not help its cause by shooting only 29 percent from the field while allowing the Greyhounds to shoot 69 percent (32 of 46) including 81 percent in the second half.

NEXT: Howard travels to Murfreesboro, TN to take on Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday at 7 pm while Loyola travels to Bloomington, IN to take on the University of Indiana on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
