Nov 21, 2009Poor Shooting Dooms Howard in Loss To Georgia StateDAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Trey Hampton recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds but it was poor shooting that proved to be the difference as Howard University fell, 57-33 to Georgia State in the Glenn Wilkes Classic at the Ocean Center. After playing well in close losses to Central Florida and Niagara in the opening round, the Bison (0-4) had their worst shooting performance of the young season, missing 18 of their first 23 shots for a frigid 21 percent from the field to trail 20-13 at the half. The Panthers (2-2) were not exactly shooting the lights out as they managed to connect on only 9-of-27 from the field. Howard had been relying heavily on the scoring and all-around play of sophomore guard Calvin Thompson, who was coming off a career-high 28 points in the loss to Niagara on Friday. But the talented guard managed only three points and a season-high four turnovers in 22 minutes of play. Georgia State was able to pull away in the second half on some improved shooting (14-of-33 for 42 percent) and the play of Hampton and Joe Dukes (10 points), who were the only players in the game to reach double figures. The Panthers were able to offset a poor shooting performance by dominating the boards, 44-27. Kyle Riley led Howard with six points while freshman Mike Phillips grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. The Bison will close out the Classic with a game against Akron on Sunday at 11 am. |
