Bethune-Cookman Holds Off Howard

Daytona Beach, FL—January 24--Anton Dickerson came out of a six-game shooting slump to score 12 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, but it was not enough to offset the scoring CJ Reed and Garrius Holloman, who each tallied 17 points as Bethune-Cookman defeated Howard, 56-49 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at the Ocean Center.

The Bison (2-17 overall, 0-7 in the MEAC) played the Wildcats (11-9 overall, 6-1 in the MEAC close through the first 18-plus minutes of the first half before the hosts closed out with a 6-0 run to take a 27-19 lead at the half.  Mike Phillips paced Howard with six points while Holloman, Reed and Alexander Starling all scored six points in a balanced attack.

The Wildcats threatened to put the game away in the first 8 minutes of the second half when they took a 17-point lead, but the Bison would not go away and rallied on the scoring of Dickerson, who scored eight straight points during a three-minute stretch to his team to within seven.

Riley contributed as well, tallying all nine of his points in the last 8 minutes of the game.  But in the end, it was the free throw shooting of Reed, who was six-for-six from the charity stripe in the final miniutes that proved to be the difference.

Phillips just missed another double double with 9 points and 12 rebounds while Riley had a good stat line with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in 40 minutes of play.

Starling recorded a double double for the Wildcats with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

NEXT UP: Howard hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at 4 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
