Old Dominion Uses Second Half Run To Down Howard
Norfolk, VA—November 16, 2011---Old Dominion University used a 10-2 run at the start of the second half to rally from a halftime deficit and pull away to a 53-43 win over Howard University in a non-
conference men's game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Monarchs (2-1) combined the scoring of Marquel De Lancey, Dimitri Batten and Chris
Cooper who combined for 28 of their team's 36 second half points, and some tough defense that
disrupted the offense of the young Bison.
De Lancey did most of his damage on drives to the basket, hitting on five of his shots from the
field in the second stanza. Batten provided balance with some long range shots while Cooper was a force in the paint. ODU shot 67 percent (14 of 21) after the break.
Despite going long stretches without scoring, Howard continued to play tough defense and
refused to let the Monarchs (2-1) pull away. After ODU took a 12-point lead with 10 minutes remaining, the Bison rallied on the scoring on reserve guard Anton Dickerson, who buried two long three pointers to get his team to within six at 38-32 with 8:16 remaining.
But Cooper helped fuel a 10-1 run with a dunk and four free throw to close out the game.
The Bison were able to take a 20-15 lead to the locker room at halftime on the strength of the
scoring of freshmen Simuel Frazier and Mike Phillips, who each scored six points. Howard did not shoot the ball especially well but the defense was effective in forcing 10 turnovers and holding the Monarchs to 26 percent shooting from the field.
The Bison were led by Phillips and Frazier, who each finished with 10 and Dickerson, who contributed seven off the bench.
Cooper led all scorers with 13 points while DeLancey and Batten added 11 and nine, respectively.
NEXT UP: The Bison will be looking to get their second win when they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on Rider University on Monday at 7 pm.
