Howard Hosts Norfolk State in MEAC Showdown on ESPNU
The Howard University men's basketball team will attempt to rebound from a disappointing loss when it takes on Norfolk State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up at 7 pm in Burr Gymnasium. The game will be aired live on ESPNU as part of a doubleheader, with the Howard women taking on the Norfolk State women at 4:30 pm.
The Bison (4-13 overall, 1-2 in the MEAC) suffered from some uncharacteristically poor free throw shooting and untimely turnovers that allowed Hampton to escape with a 51-49 victory on Saturday. Howard, which came in the game shooting almost 70 percent from the charity stripe as a team, missed 12 of its 21 attempts, including five of seven in the last two minutes.
Howard will need to get more scoring if it is to defeat Norfolk State (8-10 overall, 3-0 in the MEAC), the defending Tournament champs. Senior forward Mike Phillips and sophomore guard Simuel Frazier each tallied 11 points and sophomore forward Prince Okoroh chipped in with 10, but the rest of the team managed only 17 points.
The Bison face a formidable opponent in the Spartans, who have won two straight and are led by All-MEAC candidate Pendarvis Williams (12.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and reserve guard Malcolm Hawkins (12.2 ppg).
The two last met in the second round of the MEAC tournament in March and Norfolk State pulled out a hard-fought 70-60 win and eventually go on to win the tournament and pull off the upset of Missouri in the first round.
