Howard And Mercer Tie, 1-1, In Double-Overtime
MACON, GA. - The Howard men's soccer team opened the Wingate by Wyndham Classic battling host Mercer to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Saturday at Bear Field.
With the tie, Howard's record now stands at 0-4-1 and Mercer's sits at 0-2-2.
Guilherme Fonseca led the way for the Bison offense with five shots, and three other players tallied a shot on net, including Jamil Devers, Ray Ekobena and Rodino Wright, who created a variety of scoring chances for the team in the game.
The Bear offense was turned on the whole contest and out-shot Howard 15-9. Mercer also held a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks but the Bison pressured when needed and had some scoring chances, taking four shots in OT compared to zero by the Bears.
Fonseca made the unassisted goal for Howard in the second half, at 88:08.
Goalkeeper Adisa Bekoe had a stellar performance, making nine saves in 110 minutes of action.
The Bison wraps up action at the classic on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Alabama A&M.
