Howard Edged by No. 19 George Mason in Season Opener

FAIRFAX, VA. - Howard was nipped by No. 19 George Mason, 2-1 in the opening day of fhe DC Cup Wednesday evening at Fairfax, Va. The Bison tied things up midway through the second half on a Matt Marshall goal, but GMU scored the go ahead goal in the 86th minute.

Mason scored the first goal of the evening off of a penalty kick by Ryan Gracia. Gracia knocked the ball into the middle of the net after a yellow card was issued to HU.

Howard netted the equalizer in the 65th minute. Following a corner kick by freshman Phillip Borde, Marshall knocked the ball past GMU keeper Sean Kelley to tie the score at one.

Bison keeper Victor Thomas stopped 11 shots in the season opener for HU.

George Mason held a 23-10 advantage in shots and a slim 10-6 lead in corner kicks (10-6). A total of eight yellow cards were issued in the competitive decision.

The DC Cup continues on Saturday with a pair of matches at George Mason Stadium. The Bison will take on George Washington in the opening match of the day at 5 p.m while the host Patriots face off with American in the final match of the tournament at 7:30 p.m.
