Men's Soccer Fall to St. Francis

By Chisom Uzosike, Journalism Major

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Francis University (P.A.). The match was played in rainy weather, and was a hard fought, tightly contested match.

Both the Bison and the Red Storm entered Wednesday's match with a 1-1-1 record. SFU put pressure on the Bison early, as the Red Flash's Kingsley McLeod scored eight minutes into the match. The Bison defense was able to contain the Red Storm for the remaining of the period, however.

The second half mirrored first, as SFU's Makala Hairston scored an impressive goal from long range and gave the Red Storm a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, however, Howard freshman Akinbola Richardson broke past two Red Storm defenders to give the Bison their first goal of the game. During the final stretch of the match, The Bison got a few more opportunities to score, but were not able to equalize the score.

"It is always important to get a win on the road against a tough team like Howard," said St. Francis' head coach Michael Casper. Coach Casper commended both teams on playing a hard-fought match. The rainy weather made HU's field very slippery.

Bison head coach, Michael Lawrence said the rain was not to blame for Wednesday's loss. "[Both teams] played in the rain, so it did not affect us more than it did them." Coach Lawrence continued, "We made some turnovers and our opponents capitalized on them. We have to work on that for the future."

HU's next match is on September 11 against St. Francis College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
