NORFOLK, VA. - The Bison men's and women's tennis teams turned in good performances at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion University, on Oct. 12-14 in Norfolk, Va.
Christopher Brown lost 6-3, 6-1 in the A-1 singles before dropping an 8-3 decison to Bogdan Yordanov in the consolation round. Neilhab Avasti defeated Matt McDaniel 8-2 in his opening round contest before falling to 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (8) to Andy Chad and 8-5 to Bryan Beasler.
Armon Murray fell 8-0 to Maxx Wattenburg in the semi-final consolation round in that same bracket.
In doubles action, Avasti and George Diggs were downed 8-3 in the men's C quarterfinals. Brown and Murray were defeated 8-1 in their opening round contest in the B bracket.
On the women's side, the Laura Marin was downed 6-1, 6-1 by Barbara Costa in the A bracket but went on to win her first-round consolation match, an 8-3 decision over Lerrisa Morris. Marin lost an 8-1 decision to Blanca Saenz in the quarterfinal round.
Michele Gee lost 6-2, 6-2 to Kendall Swanson before falling 8-6 to Priscilla Roberts in the consolation round of the B-1 singles bracket.
Marian Blancada fared well in the D singles bracket. She made it all the way to the consolation semi-finals after defeating Natasha Stone 8-5 in the quarterfinals but fell 8-0 to Shannon Benic in her final decision.
Aja Dawson fell 6-0, 6-0 to Danika Robison and dropped an 8-4 matchup to Neely Edwards in the same bracket. Jordan Shaw was downed 6-0, 6-0 by Chelsea Kahle in the C-2 singles bracket. The Texas native also dropped an 8-1 contest to Ashley Melson
In doubles action, Gee and Jasmine Smith made it all the way to the B-1 semifinal round before being downed 8-1 while Blancada and Shaw fell 8-2 in the second round of the C-2 bracket.
Howard is finished with fall play and will return to action on Jan. 25 when the women's team travels to Norfolk to face off with Old Dominion. The men's squad will face ODU on Jan. 27.
