Howard Splits with Morgan State in MEAC Home Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard tennis teams split with Morgan State in its MEAC home opener on Thursday at Banneker Courts. The women's squad took down the Lady Bears 5-2 while the men's squad fell by the same score to MSU.

The Lady Bison (3-2) won five of the six singles decisions, dropping its only matchup at the No. 1 spot when MSU's Walaa Elise defeated Aja Wright 7-5, 6-1.

Jasmine Smith took down Alexis McCoy at the #2 singles spot, 6-2, 6-2 and Michele Gee won at #3 by scores of 6-3, 7-5.  Alyssa Works defeated Nekesa Thomas in a tough matchup at #4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 while Laura Marin edged MSU's Pola Olczak 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. Whitney Ambush took down Imani Willis 6-1, 6-2 for the win at #6.

Doubles action saw Smith and Gee pick up a 9-7 win at the third spot. Morgan State won the first two matchups 9-7 and 8-4.

On the men's side, Christopher Brown and Neilabh Avasthi picked up individual wins for Howard at the #1 and #2 singles spots, respectively. Brown defeated Disa Mhembere 6-3, 6-2 and Avasthi won a tough matchup over the Bears' Juan Ortiz, 7-6, 3-6 (10-8).

Joaquin Turley took down Armon Murray, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 while Chad Jones (#4) and Amato Nocera (#5) fell 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. MSU's Mauricio Ortiz won the final singles decision by a walkover.

Howard hosts Hampton tomorrow in a MEAC contest at 1pm.
