SUMTER, S.C. - The Bison men's and women's tennis squads defeated Winston-Salem State during play at the MEAC Round Robin in Sumter, S.C. The Lady Bison took down the Rams 5-2 while the men's team downed WSSU, 6-1.
On the women's side, Howard won four of the six singles matchups and took two of the three contests in doubles play.
Ashley Moore won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3 and Alyssa Works won 6-0, 6-1 over Shannon Loughnan at No. 2. Michele Gee was victorious at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gabrielle Benjamin. Sydney Sears won her matchup over WSSU's Tina Wright at No. 5 singles.
Works and Gee won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Moore and Sears teamed up at No. 2 doubles and blanked Johanna Nunez/Benjamin.
The men's squad dropped just one point in their matchup against Winston-Salem State, losing the point at No. 6 singles when Joab Odera defeated Tonique Merrill in a tight 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 decision.
Michael Gee won 6-2, 6-0 over Brian Coxton at No. 1 singles and freshman Omar Haloui was also victorious with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2. Christopher Brown made easy work of Ian Hunter with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles while George Diggs won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Chad Jones was victorious at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Troy Moore.
Brown and Gee teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles and Haloui/Jones won 9-8 at No. 2. Merrill and Diggs wrapped up play with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
In other action during the MEAC Round Robin, the Bison men were edged 4-3 by Bethune-Cookman on day one. Florida A&M took down Howard 7-0 and defending MEAC champs South Carolina State won 7-0 over HU.
The Lady Bison fell 6-1 to the Wildcats on day one of competition. North Carolina A&T took down HU 7-0 and Howard fell to SCSU by the same score on day two. The Lady Bison also dropped a 7-0 contest to the Lady Rattlers of FAMU.
The women's squad returns to action on March 12 with a non-conference matchup at Towson while the men take on No. 1 Virginia on March 10.
