PETERSBURG, VA. - The Howard tennis teams got off to a strong start this past weekend, competing in the Dr. Robert Walter Johnson Invitational in Petersburg, Va. The tournament, hosted by Virginia State (VSU), was held on Sept. 5-6.
The men's squad saw Chad Jones place third in the flight B singles. Jones defeated teammate Amato Nocera, 6-1, 6-2 while Christopher Brown fell in the flight A seminfinals, 6-2, 6-0 to Arsenio Culver of Norfolk State (NSU).
George Diggs was downed in a tough quarterfinal matchup to Petr Krakora (NSU), 6-2, 3-6, 10-4.
Jones and Nocera won the flight B doubles title after downing Stephon Allsop and Bryan Jackson (North Carolina Central), 9-8 (5-0) while Krakora and Miroslav Vicek defeated Chris Brown and George Diggs, 8-2 in the semifinals.
The women's team saw good performances from Alyssa Works and Michele Gee. Works won the draw A singles title, downing Morgan State's Viktoriya Lukyanenko 6-4, 6-3.
Gee fell to Lukyanenko, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 in an earlier matchup. Works and Gee paired up in doubles competition and defeated Kendra Plummer and Aja Dawson of VSU, 8-0 in the quarterfinal matchup before falling 8-6 in the semifinals to Stephanka Velbova and Lerissa Morris (Norfolk State).
The men's squad returns to action on Sept. 19-21 at the Georgetown Classic while the women are off until Oct. 3-5 when they compete at the Morgan State Invitational.
