VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Freshman Tonique Merrell (Newport News, Va./Heritage H.S.) was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, the league announced today.

Merrell won his first singles victory of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over George Mason's Matt Vaughn. He also teamed up with George Diggs to capture the doubles point in the 5-2 Bison win.

Howard (2-9) opens conference play against Coppin State on Friday. Game time is slated for 2 pm at Banneker Courts.
