Howard Blanks Coppin State in MEAC Opener

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Howard men's tennis team blanked Coppin State, 7-0 in the conference opener for the Bison on Sunday afternoon at Druid Hill Park.

Howard got things going with a win at No. 1 doubles by Tonique Merrell and Eric Chavous. Devard Wharton and Omar Haloui teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles and the duo of George Diggs/Brandon Diggs won at No. 3 by a walkover.

Singles action saw Wharton win easily at No. 1. He defeated James Jeffrey, 6-1, 6-3 before Haloui defeated Viktor Lemberger 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 at No. 2 singles. Chavous was victorious at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Quincy Darko while Merrell, Diggs and Burns won their singles matchups by walkovers.

Howard (1-5, 1-0 MEAC) makes the short trip to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Wed., March 24.
