Charles' Dramatic Homer Gives Howard Split With Hampton

Washington, DC, April 20-Richelle Charles capped off a dramatic comeback with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Howard get by Hampton, 8-7 in the second game of a MEAC doubleheader at Banneker Stadium.  The Pirates (28-20, 11-5 in the MEAC) took the first game, 3-2.

The Bison (22-21, 9-8 in the MEAC) appeared to be all but done when Hampton erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.  But Howard, spurred on by the unusually large home crowd, crept back in the game, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth, 4 in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh, featuring Charles' first-ever walk-off homer.

Also contributing to the win were left fielder Larcus Pickett, who went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and center fielder Tracy Javier, who banged out two hits.  Pitcher Mya Spencer (3-3) picked up the win

In the first game, the Bison got an outstanding performance from shortstop P. Nayrobi Nicholas, whose first inning two-run blast accounted for all of their runs.  Howard held on to a 2-1 lead until Hampton scored two runs in the top of the seventh to eke out the win.  Ace Dale McNeal (12-13) absorbed the loss.

The Bison will try to extend its win streak when it hosts Georgetown on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Banneker Stadium.
