Washington, DC-Semplecia Scott hit a game winning double up the middle in the bottom of the eight to lead Howard to a 2-1 win over Coppin in the first game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Banneker field. The Lady Bison dropped the second game, 5-4 when the Lady Eagles started the game with five runs in the top of the first.
Scott, a junior catcher from Stone Mountain, GA, went 4-for-6, on the day but Nayrobi Nicholas, a senior second base/shortstop from Stone Mountain, GA, who finished the day 3-for-7 hit the game tying homerun in the bottom of the seventh that forced the game into extra innings. Sophomore, pitcher, Dale McNeal went the distance picking up her seventh win of the season.
In the second game, the Bison (12-12 overall, 4-4 in the MEAC) was unsuccessful in digging themselves out of a 5-0 whole. Coppin State scored five runs off four hits in the first but the Lady Bison held them scoreless in the remaining six innings.
The Lady Bison had a strong second inning putting three runs on the board but would not score again until the sixth inning. The Lady Bison threatened in the bottom of the seventh but left two stranded to end the game. Mya Spencer was the losing pitcher in game two giving up five runs off four hits with two walks.
Nicole Buchko led Coppin State in game two with a three-run home run in the first to push the Lady Eagles ahead.
GAME NOTES: Howard will travel to Farmville, VA tomorrow to take on the Lancers of Longwood University...the Lady Bison will be back in action at home this Sunday when they host the Lady Bears of Morgan State at 1 p.m.
