Howard Rallies to Defeat South Carolina State
Lexington, SC-April 13-Howard University spotted South Carolina State a 3-0 lead and then scored 11 unanswered runs to defeat the Bulldogs, 11-3 in the first day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's softball round-up at PG Sports Complex. SC State (3-37 overall, 1-9 in the MEAC) was looking for the upset, scoring three runs in the top of the second to temporarily stun the surging Bison (23-13 overall, 7-1 in the MEAC), who have won five straight and 11 of their last 13. The Bulldogs roughed up freshman Christina McCoy for six hits. Howard Coach Tonja Braxton brought in her ace, Dale McNeal and the junior responded, allowing only one hit and no runs the rest of the way. On the offensive side, the Bison supported McNeal's efforts by getting a run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to get to within striking distance at 3-2. But it proved to be just the calm before the storm as Howard erupted for five runs in its half of the fifth inning and four more in the sixth. Courtney Young, Brianne Gutirrez, Kristina Cordova and Jenifer Bien Aime supplied the firepower, each getting and two hits. The Bulldogs aided the Bison cause by committing eight errors that led to four unearned runs. McNeal, who leads the conference in strikeouts, fanned four while picking up her 14th win of the season. They now need three wins to eclipse the old mark of 25 victories, which they set last season. Howard will meet Bethune-Cookman University at 2 pm on Saturday as the Roundup continues through Sunday with Monday serving as a rain date.
