Freshmen Young, McCoy Helps Howard Split With DSU
Dover, DE-April 22-Courtney Young came out of a mini slump by banging out four hits and driving in three runs, including a home run and Christina McCoy pitched and batted her way to an 8-6 win over Delaware State University in the second game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's softball game at the Hornets' Nest. In the first game, the Hornets (18-25) got a four hitter from Brittney Ruark to get by the Bison (29-17), 4-2. Under the MEAC's point system, neither game counts toward the conference standings. Howard and Delaware State split 2-2 on the season. In the first contest, Howard got on the board in the top of the first inning when Kristina Cordova delivered a double to score Tracy Javier. DSU countered when Sha Tabor's sacrifice fly scored Megan Lambertz from third. The Bison failed to score over the next five innings while the Hornets decided the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits and a Howard error to take a 4-1 lead. The Bison added their other run in the bottom of the seventh when Candice Tatum doubled with two out, stole third and scored on an error. Dale McNeal (16-9) went the distance for Howard, scattering nine hits while walking three and striking out three. As they have all season, the Bison bounced back nicely in the second game. Tatum, who went 3-for-5 on the day, singled to open the game, followed by the first of four hits by Young. Howard took a brief 2-0 lead. DSU came back however and scored two in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-2. Howard took a 3-2 lead but it was short lived as the Hornets tied it again in the bottom of the third. The Bison tried to get some breathing room when they scored two in the top of the fourth. DSU added a run in their half of the fourth to get within 5-4. Two innings later, Young delivered a blast that up the score to 6-4. It was then McCoy's turn. The freshman from Corona, CA settled down on the mound and allowed no runs over the next two innings while also aiding her cause with a double. She later scored and Young, the freshman right fielder from Sherwood, Ark, delivered a run-scoring single that up the mark to 8-4. The Hornets would add two more runs but McCoy (12-7) put down the rally as the Bison gained the split. She went three-for-four at the plate. Howard next plays at Columbia Union on Wednesday at 6 pm before closing out the home season on Saturday against rival Hampton University at 1 pm at Banneker Stadium. It will be Seniors Day for four members of the team who will be playing their last home game in a Bison uniform.
