Howard Splits With Hampton

Hampton, VA-April 19, 2007---Howard University allowed seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and never recovered in a 13-5 loss to Hampton in the first game and then used a five-run fifth to win, 10-7 in the second game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's softball doubleheader.  Under the MEAC's structure, only the first game counted in the conference standings.

After the Bison (26-15, 9-3 in the MEAC) took a 5-1 lead in the top of the second inning, the Pirates (25-9, 10-0 in the MEAC) exploded for seven runs, some courtesy of Howard mistakes.  During that pivotal inning, there were two errors committed and three Hampton players hit by pitches.  From there, Pirate ace Amanda Black (15-4) shut down the Bison bats while her team added five more runs for insurance.

Howard's Tracy Javier and Candice Tatum accounted for three of the five runs between them.  Bison freshman Christina McCoy started and took the loss after being roughed up for six runs.

In the second game, Howard responded and used a five-run fifth inning to gain the split.  The big blow was a grand slam home run by designated hitter Fallon Jones.  The Bison added three more runs in the top of the seventh for good measure.  Javier, Tatum and Kristina Cordova combined for four hits and three RBI.

McCoy (10-6) pitched 6.2 innings, allowed four hits and no walks while striking out three.

Howard hosts Morgan State on Saturday in a doubleheader at Banneker Stadium at 1 pm.  The Bison and Pirates meet again on April 28 at Banneker at 1 pm.
