Howard Closes Out Regular Season With Split

Severn, MD-May 6---Howard squandered a two-run lead and dropped a 3-2 decision to Morgan State University in the first game, but came back to use a four-run fourth inning to gain a 7-4 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field.

The Bison (31-18 overall, 10-4 in the MEAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Fallon Jones scored following a Morgan State error.  Howard extended its lead when Kristina Cordova hit a sols shot, her sixth of the season to give Howard a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Lady Bears (13-22 overall, 5-9 in the MEAC) put together a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Then the Bison committed their third error of the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to give Morgan State the win.  Dale McNeal (17-10), who went the distance, took the loss despite scattering five hits and striking out five.

In the second game, the inspired Lady Bears bolted out to a 4-0 lead through the first four innings before Howard woke up out of its doldrums.  Taking advantage of two of four Morgan State errors in the game, the Bison picked up two runs in their half of the fifth and then scored four more in the top of the sixth inning.  The highlight was a three-run blast by first baseman Jenifer Bien Aime.

Freshman Christina McCoy (13-8) picked up the win.  Cordova, who continues to impress, went 2 for 4 while Bien Aime and Tracy Javier both collected two hits.

GAME NOTES:  Coach Tonja Braxton juggled her lineups in both games, perhaps in anticipation of graduation on Saturday, which coincides with the MEAC Tournament, May 11-13 in Severn, MD...Tracy Javier, Semplecia Scott, Larcus Pickett and Suka Curtis Contreras are all seniors...the 31 wins is the most ever by a Howard softball team, eclipsing the old mark of 25 set last year...the first round pairings will be announced later in the week...the 17 wins by McNeal is a new school record, which she holds.
