PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - Howard swept Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a three-game softball series May 3-4 at Hawks Field in Princess Anne, Md.
The Bison took game one 7-5, game two 8-0 and game three 18-4.
Howard (21-15, 12-3 MEAC) scored first in the opener after Brianne Gutierrez's home run sent one run across the plate. The Bison took advantage of several Hawk miscues and Kristina Cordova scored on a wild pitch later that inning to give HU a 2-0 lead.
Chelsea Logan scored a run for UMES in the fourth to close within one run of the lead.
HU had five runs in the fifth inning to push the advantage to 7-1. The Hawks sent four batters across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning before Dale McNeal was sent to the mound for relief. The senior finished the final 1.1 innings with two hits and no runs while striking out two batters, sealing the 7-5 win for the Bison.
McNeal pitched six innings of the next game and gave up five runs and no hits for the shutout. Freshman Jessica Hurston came on and provided one inning of relief to help Howard to an 8-0 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Courtney Young finished 3-for-4 in that decision while Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI with one homerun.
Candice Tatum finished 2-for-4 with one run while Emily Johnson, Jennifer Bien-Amie, Jessica Norwood, Mya Spencer and McNeal had one hit each.
Howard wrapped up the series on Sunday by dishing out 15 hits while holding the Hawks to five.
Cordova, Johnson and Norwood each picked up three hits in that contest. Gutierrez added two hits and Sondra Jones, Tatum, McNeal and Spencer each finished with one.
Howard will face off with Florida a&M in the opening round of the 2008 MEAC Championship, slated for May 8-10 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
