MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Howard softball team dropped five games at the College of Charleston Invitational on Feb. 29 - Mar. 2 to remain winless on the season.
HU dropped its opening round contest to East Tennesse State, 5-2 on day one of the tournament. ESTU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning and added an extra run in the fifth to seal the win. Candice Tatum had two hits in that decision while Brianne Gutierrez, Kristina Cordova and Jennifer Bien-Amie added one hit each. Dale McNeal picked up the loss, giving up eight hits and five runs while fanning six batters.
The Lady Bison was downed by UNC Wilmington 4-3 and Akron 2-1 on day two of the tournament. Courtney Young and McNeal paced Howard in that decision with two hits apiece. Young added a run and Neal drove in two batters for a pair of RBI. Cordova finished 2-2 in the contest against Akron while Gutierrez, Bien-Amie and Tatum picked up on hit each.
HU wrapped up play at the CofC Invite with a 7-2 loss to Marist and a 5-3 extra inning loss to the host Bucs. Young and Cordova had two hits in the decision against the Red Foxes and freshman Jessica Hurston went 1-3 with one RBI. Emily Johnson hit .333 (1-3) while adding a run. Against College of Charleston, Young and Tatum picked up two hits while Christina McCoy and McNeal added one hit apiece.
Howard is off for 10 days before returning to action on March 12 against UMBC.
