WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard blanked Slippery Rock 8-0 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon to improve to 4-9 on the season. The Bison was edged by The Rock, 2-1 in the opener at Banneker Stadium.
"We put together good at bats today but not in key positions in game one," Howard Head Coach Tonja Braxton said. "Dale [McNeal] pitched well for us, but Slippery Rock executed when they needed to. I was excited to get back out there and come out strong in game two."
McNeal struck out 11 batters while giving up four hits in the opener.
In the first game of the day, the Bison struggled to get their bats going against Slippery Rock starter Lisa Getgan. Over seven innings of work, Getgan allowed only one run on three hits.
HU got on board and scored its only run in the fourth inning when Mya Spencer homered to centerfield.
The second game saw the Bison take a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Courtney Young's double plated Candice Tatum. Spencer and Emily Johnson added runs in the second to make it a 3-0 Bison lead while Young and Sondra Jones scored one run each to give Howard a 5-0 advantage going into the fifth inning. Jennifer Bien-Amie blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, plating Brianne Gutierrez and Johnson to end the game at 8-0.
Howard returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts North Carolina Central at 1pm at Banneker Stadium.
