HU Takes One from Delaware State in MEAC SB Opener
DOVER, DEL. - Courtney Young and Kristina Cordova combined for eight RBI and Candice Tatum had four hits as Howard split a MEAC doubleheader against Delaware State Saturday afternoon at the Hornets nest. HU took the first decision 11-3 but was edged by DSU, 4-3 in the second game.
In the opener, DSU took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning before Howard added two runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. HU opened things up in the seventh when Young's left field double plated Emily Johnson and Mya Spencer. Cordova singled in the next at bat and drove Young and Candice Tatum home, and Jennifer Bien-Amie sent Cordova across the plate with her centerfield single.
The Lady Bison (8-10, 1-1 MEAC) scored early in the second decision when Cordova's single plated Tatum, giving Howard a 1-0 lead. DSU evened it up in the second but HU answered back in the third and took a 2-1 lead. Delaware State exploded in the fifth and scored three runs to regain the lead. The Bison scored one in the top of the seventh when Tatum's RBI plated Johnson, but it would not be enough as the Hornets walked away with the close 4-3 victory.
