WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Howard softball team opened up its 2010 campaign with a 5-1 win over Winston-Salem State Saturday afternoon at Randy Jones Field.

The Lady Bison jumped on the board early as they earned one run in each of the first two innings and put two runs on the board in the third frame for their first victory of the 2010 season.

HU scored its first run of the contest on an illegal pitch as they opened the game with a first-inning run and followed the inning up with three runs over the next two innings en route to 10 hits and five runs in the victory.

Christine Sborz got the win on the mound for the Bison. She also went 3-for-4 with two runs. Lorae Robinson finished 2-for-4 with one run and Courtney Young added one hit, one run and two RBI.

The Lady Bison dropped the second half of the doubleheader 7-3 and fell to 1-1 on the season.

Howard is off for a few weeks before returning to action on March 4 against Georgia State.
