Howard Takes Third at Sean Savage Epilepsy Awareness Tournament
DOVER, DEL. - Howard went 2-0 during action at the Sean Savage Epilepsy Awareness Tournament on Saturday by defeating Md. Eastern Shore 16-0 and NC Central 13-1.
Howard finished third at the tournament after dropping two matches on Sunday. Colgate defeated HU 5-2 and host Delaware State won 8-0 over Howard.
Senior Christina McCoy and junior Carly Martin picked up wins in the victories on Saturday. Senior Nicole Saez also accomplished a rare feat in the first game by hitting a grand slam.
In the first game against Maryland Eastern Shore, Howard raced out to an 11-0 lead after three innings and didn't look back. Martin threw three innings and allowed one hit before Jessica Hurston pitched the final two innings in relief.
Saez and sophomore Rebecca Kirshner had three hits in the victory. Lorae Robinson scored a game-high four runs while Saez and senior Courtney Young added three runs each. Saez also drove in seven runs while Christine Sborz added three RBI.
The second game vs. North Carolina Central started differently for the Bison as HU gave up a run in the first inning. But Howard took advantage of five NCCU errors and took a 7-1 lead going into the third inning. Howard then blew the game open with a five run sixth inning to push their lead to 13-1.
Senior Courtney Young homered in the game two win and drove in a pair of runs. Saez contributed three hits, two runs and two RBI. Seven Bison had at least one hit in the victory.
The Lady Bison will travel back to Dover for its first conference matchup against Delaware State on Friday, April 2.
