Howard Nipped by Rhode Island, UNC Greensboro on Opening Day of Buzz Classic

WOODSTOCK, GA. - Howard was nipped by Rhode Island (URI) and UNC Greensboro (UNCG) on the opening day at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic. The Bison dropped a 14-13 contest to URI in eight innings and were later edged 1-0 in the nightcap.

Howard jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rams responded with six runs in the top of the second, however, for a 6-4 lead but HU added three more runs to regain the lead at 7-6.

URI added four more runs and held a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Howard plated three runners to tie the score up at 10-10 and push the game into extra innings.

HU was paced by Courtney Young and Nicole Saez, who each homered in the decision. Young went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI while Saez added three runs and two RBI.

Christine Sborz and Rebecca Kirshner added two hits apiece and Aisha Ledet finished 3-for-5 with one run and three RBI.

Sophomore Rebecca Kirshner paced Howard with a 2-for-3 outing against UNCG.

The Spartans (5-10) got the only run they would need in the third inning when Kristen Gabel plated the run for UNCG.

HU (1-5) faces off with Seton Hall and Western Kentucky during action at the Buzz Classic on Saturday.
