PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - Emily Johnson pitched seven innings of shutout ball on Saturday at Lady Hawks Field to lift Howard to a 7-0 victory over Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) North opponent Maryland Eastern Shore. Johnson (6-3) struck out eight batters and helped her own cause by going 2-3 from the plate with a run batted in and two runs scored.
In the second inning, Bison (22-20, 12-1) junior Carly Martin hit a two RBI single up the middle to break a scoreless tie. The hit proved to be all the run support that Johnson would need.
With Howard up just 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Bison's bats caught fire. Howard hitters tattooed Hawks (1-31, 0-13) pitching for four runs on five hits in the frame.
With the win, Howard extends their conference winning streak to nine games and clinches at least a share of the MEAC North regular season title and the top seed in MEAC tournament which begins Thursday in Ormond Beach, Florida. The Bison will play Maryland Eastern Shore in a doubleheader Sunday at Lady Hawks Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
