Longwood Takes Doubleheader From Howard

FARMVILLE, VA. - Longwood took both ends of a softball doubleheader versus Howard on Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Lancers nipped the Bison 6-5 in the first game and later won 8-1 in the nightcap.

Howard trailed the first six innings of the opener before mounting a comeback.

Longwood led 6-0 going into the seventh until the Lady Bison exploded for five runs in the top of the inning.

The Lady Bison capitalized on a pair of Longwood errors and other miscues allowed Ciera Gordon and Emily Johnson to cross the plate. Carly Martin later scored on a passed ball and a Courtney Young RBI drove in Lorae Robinson and Candace Rogers to put the Bison within one run of the Lancers.

With two outs, Rebecca Kirshner reached base in the next at bat for the game-tying run, but the comeback fell short with Longwood surviving 6-5.

The nightcap was a different contest for HU as the Lancers capitalized on five Bison errors. Longwood held a slim 6-5 advantage in hits, but put together six RBI compared to one by the Bison.

Howard (13-15, 3-0 MEAC) hosts Coppin State in its home opener on Saturday at 2 PM.
