Mar 19, 2009 Bison Sweep SpartansBoxscore (Game 1) NORFOLK, VA. - Howard swept Norfolk State 8-7 and 13-2 in a pair of softball matchups Wednesday evening at the NSU Softball Field. In the first game, HU scored five runs in the first inning and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. Norfolk State tied things up in the third inning and took the lead when Danielle Wright scored in the fifth. The Spartans added another run in the sixth inning before the Bison opened things up in the bottom seventh. Rebecca Kirshner, Emily Johnson and Trina Kindred all scored to give Howard the 8-7 lead. Christina McCoy closed out the final 4.2 innings and picked up the win for HU. Alyssa Velasquez got the loss for NSU. Game two was not nip-and-tuck like the first contest. The Bison took a comfortable 4-0 lead before scoring nine runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Spartan defense gave up four errors in the sixth and HU capitalized, scoring four of its nine runs unearned. Aisha Ledet scored the first run of the inning and Nicole Saez hit a grand slam, plating herself, Young, Tierra Maxwell and Ciera Gordon. NSU had two pitching changes in the sixth but Howard keep their bats going as four different Bison scored on unearned runs. Howard improves to 8-17 with the pair of wins and returns to action this weekend at the Hampton Lady Pirates Classic in Virginia Beach, Va. |
