Howard Falls to Longwood in Softball Home Opener
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard University softball team finally had its home opener today after rain and poor field conditions postponed several games dating back to March. The team was not able to pick up a pair of wins, however, as Longwood nipped HU 1-0 and 8-6 in a doubleheader at Banneker Field.
In the opener, the Bison outhit the Lancers 3-2 but it was a single run in the third inning that proved to be the difference.
Wells had a lead-off homerun in the top of the third, giving LU the 1-0 lead.
Howard could not get their bats going and managed just hit over the next four innings.
Freshman Carly Martin got the loss for the Bison while Wells improved to 16-15 with the win.
The Bison committed a season-high seven errors in game two. HU battled through the miscues and took a 5-4 lead after five innings.
Longwood tied things up in the sixth when Betterton's single plated teammate Long.
LU added three more runs in the top seventh for the 8-5 lead. Howard added an unearned run in the bottom seventh but could not capitalize on the two Lancer errors that inning.
Howard (12-26) plays Coppin State in a single game on Wednesday in Severn, Md.
