Howard Picks Up Two Wins at Pirates Classic; Kirshner Named to All-Tournament Team

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Howard defeated Buffalo and Pace during action at the Lady Pirates Classic March 20-22 in Virginia Beach, Va. Freshman Rebecca Kirshner was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
The Lady Bison finished 2-2 on the weekend after being edged 3-2 by South Carolina State and 2-1 by Maryland Eastern Shore.
Howard blanked Buffalo and Pace, 1-0 and 8-0, respectively.
In the matchup against Pace, junior Christina McCoy pitched a complete game shutout. The California native struck out five batters and gave up just four hits in five innings.
Kirshner went 1-3 against Setters with one run and three RBI. She blasted a three-run home run in the fourth inning and plated teammates Lorae Robinson and Trina Kindred.
Robinson finished 2-3 and Carly Martin went a perfect 2-2. Emily Johnson batted .333 with one run and two RBI.
In the matchup against SCSU, the game was tied 2-2 until the top seventh, when Pereira singled for the Bulldogs and plated Thompson for the game winning run.
Howard (10-19) took an early 1-0 lead against UMES, but the Hawks tied things up in the sixth when Kendra Saunders scored for the maroon and gray.
Whitehurst homered for UMES in the seventh to give the Hawks the 2-1 win.
The Bison host North Carolina Central in its home opener on Thursday. The doubleheader is slated for 1pm at Banneker Field.
