NEWARK, DEL. - In their first dual meet action of the season, the Howard University Swimming team traveled to Newark, Delaware to face the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware.  The Bison gave a spirited effort in all of their races and continue their improvement from week to week.  Delaware provided a two large and talented squads for the visitors and, in the end, the Blue Hens wound-up taking both contests.  The Howard women lost to the host Blue Hens 157-73 while the men dropped the contest 145-87.

"It was very exciting to get our dual meet season underway against such a formidable program," said head coach Matt Salerno.  "I am very pleased with the toughness our team showed this afternoon.  It is no small feat to have every member of our squad compete and execute four events, but togther, that's the challenge these athletes tackled today."

Indeed, every Bison swimmer competed in the maximum four events, which is very rare for any team.  The highlight of the day came courtesy of senior captain Miguel Orellana.  Orellana took control of the 200 freestyle and powered his way to a 1:44.94 and a first place finish.  Senior Brad Worrell clocked a 1:51.95 and junior Damjan Strbac was right behind with a 1:52.38.

Orellana continued his great meet with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle with a 47.78, just .13 behind Delaware's Hans Gillan.  The senior, again, finished in second place with a very good 100 butterfly swim, clocking a 54.57.

Strbac's 50 freestyle effort notched him second place honors at a time of 22.47 with Worrell right behind in third place at 22.74.   Sophomores Steven Lott and Kelvin Goodman swam great this afternoon, as well.  Lott's swam a 59.39 in his 100 backstroke for a fourth place finish.  Goodman notched his fourth places in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM with times of  2:30.39 and 2:25.41, respectively.

On the ladies side, Chelsea Andrews turned in three solid performances.  The freshman tallied a second place swim with a 25.09 in the 50 freestyle.  She also notched two fourth place marks in the 200 freestyle (2:00.78) and the 200 IM (2:11.89.)  Fellow freshmen Summer Davis and Cachanda Evans also had strong impacts on the squad.  Davis swam resiliently in the 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle, tallied fourth place marks in her 200 fly.  Evans first collegiate competition saw her swim to fourth place honors in the 100 fly.

"We can take a lot of positives from facing Delaware," said Salerno.  We've made tremendous strides in just these first few weeks.  I expect that we'll continue to set the bar high in welcoming the challenges presented before us."

The Bison return to action this Friday when the men and women travel to East Orange, New Jersey to face the Seton Hall Pirates.
