BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Howard swimming teams were downed by Gardner Webb in Coastal Collegiate Swimming (CCSA) action Friday afternoon at Boiling Springs, N.C. The men's squad lost 94-62 while the women's team was downed 107-65.
The losses drops both teams to 0-2 (0-1 CCSA) on the season.
Miguel Orellana turned in a good performance and took first in the 500 yard freestyle in 4:59.58. He was the runner up in the 200 yard individual medley after finishing the even tin 2:00.83.
Charles Canady won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.04 while teammate Omar McKenzie took fifth in the same event in 1:21.34. Canady also paced the Bison with a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 yard freestyle. The freshman was the runner up in 1:55.75 while Isaiah Allen and James Washington took third and fourth in 1:58.37 and 2:25.01, respectively.
Tyrone Dash was second in the 50 yard freestyle in 23.54 while Justin Morrison (26.47) and McKenzie (27.29) took third and fourth, respectively.
Kevin MacIntyre was the runner up in the 100 yard butterfly after finishing his event in 59.97. Allen took second in the 100 yard freestyle (51.26) while Dash and Washington took home third and fourth place finishes in 55.24 and 1:07.27.
The women's squad saw a two first place performances from junior Nzingha Murphy. The Atlanta native took first in the 100 yard freestyle (54.33) and the 50 yard freestyle (25.56). Teammate Ashley Hairston was third (57.41) in the former while Allyssa Armstrong took home a fourth place finish (26.54) in the latter.
Khalilah Robinson won the 100 yard freestyle in 1:12.43 and grabbed nine points for the Bison in the team standings. Polo Edwards paced Howard to a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 yard freestyle. The sophomore took home runner up honors in 2:03.94 while Hairston was third in 2:07.83. Uchechukwuka Monu rounded out the top finishers for HU after taking fourth in 2:15.58.
Jessica Freeland took bronze in the 200 yard individual medly in 2:28.66 and Robinson was the runner up in the 100 yard butterfly after finishing the event in 1:03.96.
Armstrong (1:07.24) and Monu (1:11.70) were third and fourth inthe 100 yard backstroke while Edwards grabbed four points for Howard with her second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:30.71).
The Bison will return to action this weekend for a dual meet against Mount St. Mary's and NJIT on November 3.
