HU Edged in Duel Meet; Lady Bison Down VMI

EMMITSBURG, MD. - The Howard swim teams returned to action this past weekend in Emmitsburg, Md. The men's squad was edged by St. Peter's and VMI in a duel meet while the Lady Bison picked up a win over VMI, but fell to SPC and the Mount in a tri-meet at the same location.

Sophomore Miguel Orellana won the 200m butterfly in 2:16.39 while teammate Jules Graham was the runner up in the same event in 2:26.67. Orellana later went on to win gold in the 400m freestyle (4:19.30) and Justin Morrison was sixth in 5:15.94.

Charles Canady was the runner-up in the 1500m freestyle (19:16.42) and Graham took second in the 200m freestyle after finishing in 2:05.38. Canady later won silver in the 200m breaststroke (2:43.24).

Damjan Strbac won bronze in the 50m freestyle in 24.99 and Blair Matthews took fifth in the same event in 28.02. Strbac was also third in the 100m freestyle (54.97). 

Steven Lott (5:32.10) and James Washington (6:19.05) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400m individual medley.

The women's squad got a first-place finish from senior Aminah Murphy in the 50m freestyle (28.17). She also won the 200m backstroke in 2:35.37. Classmate Nzingha Murphy won gold in the 100m freestyle in 1:01.02 and Polo Edwards took fourth in the same event (1:04.68).

Nzingha Murphy was the runner-up in the 200m freestyle (2:18.55) and Uche Monu placed third in 2:25.31. Monu also took fifth in the 200m backstroke (2:48.68).

Edwards won bronze in the in the 400m freestyle after finishing in 4:56.94 and Monique Major took third in the 200m breaststroke (3:31.00.

Howard returns to action on Jan. 31 at Drexel University.
